ICSE Class 10 English Language Solved Specimen Paper 2027

1.
(i) Write an original short story that begins with the words: ‘He was the funniest boy I had ever met…’

The Funniest Boy I Had Ever Met

He was the funniest boy I had ever met… and yet, behind his constant jokes, there was a story that none of us knew.

His name was Rohan. He had joined our class in the middle of the academic year. On his very first day, he entered the classroom, tripped over the doormat and immediately announced, “Well, at least I have made an entrance!” Everyone burst out laughing. Even our strict class teacher struggled to hide her smile.

Soon, Rohan became the center of attention. He could turn the most ordinary situation into something hilarious. During lunch, he would imitate our teachers, make funny faces and invent ridiculous stories. Whenever someone felt upset, he was always there with a joke.

One Monday morning, our teacher announced that we had to participate in an inter-school drama competition. To everyone's surprise, Rohan volunteered to play the main character. We expected him to make the whole performance funny, but he surprised us during rehearsals. He could act seriously and express emotions remarkably well.

A week before the competition, however, Rohan suddenly stopped coming to school. We were worried. When he returned after three days, he looked unusually quiet. During lunch, I finally asked him what had happened.

“My father lost his job,” he said softly. “Things are difficult at home. I don't want everyone to feel sad because of me, so I keep making jokes.”

I was speechless. The boy who made everyone laugh was actually hiding his own worries behind his smile.

On the day of the competition, Rohan gave an outstanding performance. Our team won the first prize. When he received the trophy, he looked at all of us and smiled.

“This one's for everyone who needs a reason to smile,” he said.

We applauded loudly.

From that day onwards, I stopped thinking of Rohan merely as the funniest boy in our class. He taught me that sometimes the people who make us laugh the most are fighting battles we know nothing about.

And that was the day I learnt that a smile can sometimes be the bravest thing a person can wear.

(ii) You were punished for something you had not done. Give an account of the incident and how you proved your innocence.

Punished for Something I Had Not Done

It was a Monday morning, and everyone in our class was preparing for the weekly mathematics test. Our teacher, Mrs. Sharma, entered the classroom and placed a stack of question papers on her desk. She warned us not to touch them until she gave us permission.

During the lunch break, I stayed back in the classroom to complete my science project. When I returned after lunch, I noticed that the question papers were scattered across the floor. Some of them had been torn. Mrs. Sharma entered a few minutes later and was shocked to see the mess.

“Who did this?” she demanded.

Nobody answered.

Suddenly, one of my classmates pointed at me. “Ma'am, Arjun was in the classroom during lunch.”

I tried to explain that I had not touched the papers, but before I could finish, Mrs. Sharma became angry. She believed that I had disobeyed her instructions deliberately. As punishment, she made me stand outside the classroom for the entire mathematics period and informed the principal about my behavior.

I felt humiliated and helpless. I knew I was innocent, but I had no way to prove it.

After the class ended, I requested Mrs. Sharma to give me one opportunity to explain. I told her exactly what I had been doing during lunch. I had been working on my science project in the laboratory before returning to the classroom. Fortunately, my science teacher remembered seeing me there.

There was still one more thing that could prove my innocence. Our school had recently installed a CCTV camera in the corridor outside our classroom. The principal checked the recording.

The footage showed that I had entered the classroom only five minutes before the lunch break ended. A few minutes later, another student entered the room, looked around and tore the question papers before leaving.

Mrs. Sharma called me back and apologised for punishing me without knowing the whole truth. She also praised me for remaining calm instead of arguing with her.

That incident taught me an important lesson: appearances can be misleading, and one should never judge a person without knowing the complete truth. I was relieved to have proved my innocence, but I was even happier that the real culprit finally admitted his mistake.

(iii) 'Too many cooks spoil the broth'. Express your views either for or against this statement.

Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth - For

“Too many cooks spoil the broth” is a well-known proverb which means that when too many people try to control or interfere in the same task, the final result may be poor. I strongly agree with this statement because excessive interference often creates confusion, disagreement and unnecessary delays.

To begin with, when several people are responsible for one task, each person may have a different opinion. Instead of concentrating on the work, they may spend most of their time arguing about whose idea should be accepted. This can be seen during group projects at school. If every student wants to decide the topic, design the project and present it, the group may waste precious time discussing minor matters. Eventually, the project may be completed hurriedly and without proper coordination.

Another disadvantage is that too many people may give contradictory instructions. A person who is following one plan may suddenly be told to change it by another member. Such constant changes can lead to mistakes and frustration. Moreover, when responsibility is shared by too many people, nobody may feel fully responsible for the final outcome. If something goes wrong, everyone may blame someone else.

The proverb can also be applied to professional life. A company may have a talented team, but if every employee interferes with every decision, the work can become slow and disorganized. A good leader therefore assigns different responsibilities to different people and allows them to perform their duties independently.

However, this does not mean that teamwork is unnecessary. In fact, cooperation is essential for completing many difficult tasks. The problem arises when cooperation turns into interference. People should share ideas, but there must be one clear plan and proper division of responsibilities.

Therefore, I completely agree that “too many cooks spoil the broth”. When too many people try to take charge of the same task, confusion is likely to replace cooperation. A successful team is not one in which everyone controls everything, but one in which each person knows their role and performs it responsibly.

Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth - Against

“Too many cooks spoil the broth” suggests that involving too many people in one task results in confusion and failure. Although this may sometimes be true, I do not completely agree with the statement. In my opinion, when people work together with proper planning and cooperation, having several people involved can actually improve the final result.

Firstly, different people possess different skills and ideas. When these abilities are combined, a task can be completed more effectively. For example, while organising a school function, one student may be good at decoration, another at speaking, another at managing money and someone else at organising the programme. If all of them work together according to their abilities, the function is likely to be more successful than if only one student were responsible for everything.

Secondly, teamwork allows people to identify and correct mistakes. A person working alone may overlook an error because of a lack of knowledge or experience. When several people examine the same work, they can point out problems and suggest improvements. Thus, more people can sometimes lead to better decisions rather than spoiled results.

This can also be seen in professional fields. Important projects such as building a bridge, developing software or organizing a large event require the cooperation of many people. Engineers, designers, managers and workers have different responsibilities, but their combined efforts are necessary. It would be unreasonable to expect one person to perform every task alone.

Of course, problems can arise if everyone tries to control the same work. Disagreements and confusion may occur when there is no proper leadership or division of duties. However, this does not prove that having many people involved is harmful. The real problem is poor coordination, not the number of people.

Therefore, I disagree with the proverb when it is taken as a universal rule. Several cooks do not necessarily spoil the broth. If each person understands their responsibility, respects others' opinions and works towards a common goal, many hands can make a difficult task easier. Good leadership and cooperation can turn many different ideas into one successful result.

(iv) You recently took part in an interesting class project. Describe how your group planned and carried out the task. Explain how this will help you in the future.

An Interesting Class Project

Last month, our class was given an interesting project on the topic “Save Our Environment”. Our teacher divided us into groups of five and asked each group to prepare a presentation showing practical ways of reducing pollution. My group decided to make a model of an eco-friendly city.

We first held a meeting during our lunch break to discuss how we would complete the project. Each member suggested an idea, and after discussing them, we decided to divide the work according to our individual abilities. Riya and I were responsible for preparing the buildings and roads. Aman collected information about renewable sources of energy, while Neha prepared posters and slogans. Rahul was given the responsibility of arranging the materials and presenting the project.

We had only one week to complete the task, so we prepared a simple schedule. Every afternoon, we worked together for about an hour. We used cardboard boxes, coloured paper, ice-cream sticks, empty bottles and other waste materials to construct our model. We made small houses with solar panels, planted tiny paper trees along the roads and created a miniature rainwater harvesting system.

Initially, we faced several problems. The model collapsed when we tried to attach the buildings to the base. Instead of blaming one another, we discussed the problem and strengthened the base with additional cardboard. We also realised that some of the information on our posters was incorrect, so Aman checked it again from reliable sources.

Finally, the day of the presentation arrived. Rahul explained our model confidently while the rest of us demonstrated its different features. Our teacher appreciated the creativity and teamwork shown by our group. Although we did not know whether we would win the competition, we were proud of what we had accomplished together.

The project taught me several valuable lessons. I learnt how to plan work, divide responsibilities, manage time and solve problems calmly. More importantly, I understood the importance of listening to others and respecting different opinions.

These skills will certainly help me in the future. Whether I work on a college assignment, join a professional organization or handle an important project, I will know how to cooperate with others and contribute responsibly. The project was not merely a school activity; it was a valuable lesson in teamwork and leadership.

(v) Study the picture given below. Write a story, a description, or an account of what it suggests to you. Your composition may be about the subject of the picture, or you may take suggestions from it; however, there must be a clear connection between the picture and your composition

A Bond Beyond Words

The picture shows two young boys, apparently brothers, sharing a simple but joyful moment. The elder boy is carrying the younger one on his back, while both are smiling happily at the camera. Their worn clothes and the simple surroundings suggest that they may belong to a poor family. Yet, their cheerful faces show that happiness does not always depend on wealth or expensive possessions.

The picture immediately makes me think about the special bond between siblings. The elder boy seems proud to carry his younger brother, while the younger one appears completely comfortable and secure in his arms. Such a small act of care reflects love, trust and responsibility. Although the elder child is young himself, he seems willing to protect and support his little brother.

The scene also reminds me of my own childhood. I remember walking to the market with my younger cousin on a summer evening. He became tired after walking for a long time, so I carried him on my back. We had no expensive toys or gadgets to entertain us. We simply laughed, talked and enjoyed each other's company. Looking back, I realise that those ordinary moments are among my happiest memories.

The picture also highlights the beauty of a simple life. The children appear to find happiness in one another rather than in material possessions. In today's world, many children are surrounded by electronic devices and expensive entertainment, yet they may not always experience such genuine moments of companionship.

For me, the picture carries an important message. Family members should care for one another, especially during difficult times. A small act of kindness may mean much more than an expensive gift. The elder boy's willingness to carry his brother shows that love is often expressed through actions rather than words.

Thus, the picture is not merely an image of two smiling children. It represents love, innocence, responsibility and the strength of family bonds. It reminds me that life's greatest joys are often found in the simplest moments and in the people who stand beside us.

32 Hadapsar Road,

Hadapsar, Pune - 411028. 14th February 2026,

Dear Grandfather,

I hope you are doing well and in good health. I am excited to share with you a wonderful day I recently spent playing outdoor games with my friends. I especially wanted to thank you and tell you about it because you have always encouraged me to go outside, be active, and enjoy sports instead of staying indoors all the time.

Last Sunday, my friends and I decided to spend the entire day at the playground in our neighborhood. We started the morning with a game of cricket. I remembered how you once told me that teamwork and patience are very important in games. While playing, I tried to focus on coordinating with my teammates and encouraging them, even when we lost a wicket. After cricket, we ended the day with a few rounds of badminton. Running around in the fresh air, feeling the sunshine, and hearing everyone laugh made the day truly special.

At first, we were all very competitive, and there were small disagreements about rules and scores. But we soon realized that enjoying the game mattered more than winning. By the end of the day, we were cheering for each other and celebrating every small success together. I felt energetic, happy, and proud of myself for staying active the whole day.

This experience taught me many valuable lessons. I learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and fair play. I also understood how outdoor games keep both body and mind healthy. Most importantly, I realized that the best memories are created by spending time with friends in the open air.

Thank you, once again, for always motivating me.

Yours lovingly, Rohan

(ii) You recently visited the Museum in your city and noticed the poor condition of some of the exhibits on display. Write a letter to the Director of the Museum, bringing the matter to his attention. Request him to take necessary action to ensure that these valuable objects are properly preserved.

18 Cascade Enclave, Diamond Harbour Road, Kolkata - 700034.

14th February 2026.

The Director, Rajgir Museum, Rajgir Main Road, Rajgir - 803116.

Dear Ma'am,

I hope this letter finds you well. I recently visited the Rajgir Museum with my parents and was taken aback to find many of the exhibits on display in a poor state of repair/poorly preserved.

Custodial neglect including overcrowding, deterioration from damp and fungus, fading from improper light exposure and chemical damage from what seem to be amateur attempts at restoration in the past, have led to widespread damage of these precious paintings, statues and other artefacts.

I would appreciate it if you could kindly arrange for steps to be taken to repair and restore these precious proofs of our heritage. Documenting and photographing, dry cleaning with dust removal, material-specific washing, bonding and proper preservation/storage may be undertaken.

I look forward to your response and hope to see an improvement in our beloved museum when we next visit.

Yours faithfully, Shruti Dey
